Former Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo’o has finally joined the plethora of other former members of Government at the Kondengui Maximum security prison for allerged embezzlement of state funds when he was still a member of government.
On Tuesday March 05 2019th, Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo’o who has also served as a Minister of Transport was invited at the special criminal court in Yaounde for interrogations which lasted for over seventy two hours. He has been accused of diverting huge sums of money to his private account when he was Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of defence.
Investigators have visited his residence to take stock of the situation and reports have it that his wife and two sons are implicated in the case and will be expected at the criminal court in the days ahead to answer questions regarding the embezzlement. It is reported that Mrs. Mebe Ngo’o even collapsed due to the shock.
Mebe Ngo’o is being accompanied to the detention cell by some of his close collaborators such as Joel Mboutou former defence attaché at the Cameroon Embassy in Morocco, Victor Emmanuel Menye Assistant General Manager of SCB BANK and Maxime Mbangue Former Adviser at the Ministry of defence.
Social media has reported that 3bIllion FCFA was recovered in cash at the residence of Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo’o. Investigators also found 444 suits, 48 vehicles used for rents and 20 VIP vehicles among other assets.
Mebe Ngo’o while serving as the Minister Delegate in charge of defence was considered one of the most powerful members of government and some opinions even hold that he was seen as a possible successor to the Head of State. However, such speculations soon came to an end when he was replaced in 2015 by Joseph Beti Assomo. Mebe Ngo’o moved on to become Minister of transport and was later dismissed from the government during the March 2018 Cabinet shakeup.
Mr. Mebe Ngo’o is not the first Cameroonian member of government to be sent to Kondengui after dismissal from government.
He is only adding to the long list of others like Chief Ephraim Inoni former Prime Minister, Marafa Hamidou Yaya former Minister of Territorial Administration and decentralization, Basil Atangana Kouna former Minister of water and energy, Iya Mohammed former President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), Amadou Vamoulke Former Director General of the Cameroon Radio Televison (CRTV), Yves Michel Fotso former Administrator at the now defunct Cameroon Airlines (CAMAIR), E.G Ondo Ndong former Director General of FEICOM, Gervais Mendoze, Atangana Mebara and others, all jailed for alleged embezzlement of state funds.
