British Prime Minister Theresa May has announced today May 24, 2019 that she will step down as leader of the Conservative party on June 7, 2019 after failing to win support for her Brexit plan to withdraw from the European Union (EU).
Speaking at Downing Street, Theresa May broke down in tears as she said it was the honor of her life to serve as British PM and regrets not being able to deliver the Brexit deal. “The second female Prime Minister but definitely not the last. I do so with no ill will, but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the country I love”
Her resignation will pave a way for a contest that will decide the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Theresa May who has served for almost three years as British PM was under enormous pressure to resign after a backlash from her MPs who have rejected the PM’s withdrawal agreement on three separate occasions.
Theresa May will continue to serve as caretaker Prime Minister while a conservative leadership contest takes place to decide the new Prime Minister. Boris Johnson is considered as favorite candidate to succeed Theresa May..
