A fire incident has caused enormous damage at the Cameroon lone oil refinery – SONARA. The fire incident started around 10PM local time last night Friday May 31, 2019 in Moukudange, Limbe II subdivision of Fako division in the South West region where the company is located.
Inhabitants heard a thunderous explosion and later saw the flames in the company. The fire incident broke out in one of the extension tankers and spread further to other tankers.
Fire fighters and BIR elements in helicopter arrived at the scene to put out the fire which caused huge damage.
The cause of the fire incident is still to be established. However, Sources say the connection between the new extension tanker and the main one was poorly done and workers have been worried about the technical lapses.
Offices, bars and restaurants were also destroyed. Reports say surrounding residents have fled the area with their belongings and work will not go on in many departments of the company for weeks.
SONARA is one of the major economic structures in the restive South West region of Cameroon. Many are currently wondering what is going to happen to the region if the company does not get back to its feet as soon as possible considering that the main economic structure, the Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC) which has employed thousands of Cameroonians from the region is already on its kneels.
Another major structure, PAMOL in Ndian division of the same South West has also been severely hit by the crisis.
