Photos of exorbitant marital items a groom was made to buy during a bride price ceremony in Enugu state, Nigeria have been trending online. The photos were shared by the bride, Deborah Ifunanya on her facebook page. Since then, social media has been buzzing with mixed reactions.
According to some, the ceremony is called IKPANRI and it is a normal traditional ceremony practiced in Awgu, Enugu state. Others have however argued that it shouldn’t be practiced anymore as the cost is apparently too heavy for the groom.
In the photos, the numerous items which included travel boxes, ankara fabrics, yams, goats and many other items were displayed in the compound. Here are pictures of the items.
In a similar story, a man who has planned his traditional marriage to take place in December 2019, during the Christmas period, is currently in shock after receiving the list of demands from his soon-to-be in-laws. According to a friend of the groom who shared the story, everything on the list cost N 1,000,000 (1,632,880 FCFA, 2,756.92 United States Dollar).
When people hear such stories, they ask questions like, will any member of that girl’s family ever visit that house after collecting way too much from the groom? And again, what happens next when all these ceremonies are over and they are back home alone? Will that man treat his wife with respect or just as a commodity? Shouldn’t a bride price be just something symbolic?
